This cover is quite mis-leading, as it makes it look like it's a Christmas book, and there isn't a single scene that is set at Christmas time. It starts in February, and ends a few months later.

Five French Hens is about five ladies in their 70s discovering that life isn't over.

Jen is 73, and just engaged to Eddie, who has decided to go on a stag do with his son to Las Vegas. Jen, and her friends decide they want to go to Paris, and so off the go!

Rose, a widow who teaches piano, Pam, who loves her dog and isn't interested in a relationship with anyone, Tess who is boisterous but has a husband who loves golf, and finds her embarrassing, and Della, whose only problem is money, and who is very much in love with her husband even after all these years.

I really enjoyed this book, even if in the back of my mind I was wondering about when Christmas would fit in!

Five French Hens was published on 5th December 2019, and is available to buy on Amazon and on Waterstones. I've found a link to where you can search for local bookshops, including independent!

This story is so fun, it completely changed my perspective over life, romance, friendship, career. The 5 hens are so fun and I got myself many times comparing them to my grandma stories and how they would be happier if they had a group of friends like those.

Eye rolls and snoozing

Honestly, this book was so .... boring? Dated? All over the place? I really wanted to love this book... but it fell short on every level and I forced myself to get through it. The beginning was slow, the middle was fine and the ending was blah. Maybe it’s because I’m not an older woman in my 70s that I felt disconnected from this the storyline. I’m not sure what I hated more, the controlling male figures that don’t want the women in their life to do anything or the women characters writing this off as “safe” and “comforting” in a way. And what is with the random side stories about some of the women being tempted to have an affair that turned into sexual harassment stories during a “hen” party. And then with the story line of Pam the single woman of the group who had a dark past and let it control her life for 50 some odd years. It may be a generational divide and that I missed the point of this book but I could NOT stop rolling my eyes at this entire book. Not for nothing but what warm and uplifting book has weird side stories about sexual assault? I really wish this book was better than it was... so disappointed.

Never too old to live!

Enjoyed the characters and their pluckiness. Cute sub plots filled with cheery hope. As a middle ages it gave me hope.

This is the story of five elderly ladies who become friends and travel to France for a hen party. During the book, you find out about their lives back at home and also what happens on the hen party.
The characters are very likeable and are full of depth. They will make you smile and laugh but you will also feel sad at times.
The writing is so down to earth that it makes you feel like you are a part of the story.
I hope that there will be a sequel to this book as I would love to know what the future holds for them.
A great book that shows the value of friendship.
