novellas rarely hit five stars just by virtue of their length and the inability to build a full world and full characters, but this one came darn close

“These are the winds that cast us together, these are the winds that cast us apart. They cast as they wish, and we have naught but to follow.”

Following the death of her friend Clay, Danielle seeks out the utopia he had described and shockingly left. She finds Freedom, Iowa, a community still paying the debt on the price of its peace. Uliksi, the force summoned to make it all possible still roams the land. The people are divided on the necessity of its presence for the community to continue to flourish. Regardless of where they stand, everyone lives in fear of the demon and its undead minions watching their every move.

Danielle is immediately thrown into the middle. Her loyalty and integrity bind her to Clay’s vision and the fate of his friends. A quick read with a different spin on the age old puzzle of balancing power and peace for the greater good of all. It keeps you wondering if duty is in the eye of the deer holder or if one revolution is only as good as the next.

DNF because I get irrationally annoyed at books that are overtly or self consciously "punk" (sorry Maggie)(but this book uses the word 3 times in 2 pages). Like the quickest way to get me to not want to read something is to call it "elf punk" or "hope punk" or somesuch ‾\_(ツ)_/‾

A short novella that is very engaging. Would be five stars but the ending/resolution felt a little off to me.
