I saw this in one of TOR's promotional emails and searched it up because of its Iowa connection. I did not realize it was a novella so I finished it in one sitting. Pretty interesting characters and setting, and the author wastes no time establishing what kind of story this is. Some eye-rolling to be had at the prevailing Anarchism throughout, but the same way you roll your eyes at everything that's different which just makes us all human and kind of shitty.
The IA setting was tenuous. It could have been set in any rural area, really.
The demon deer made for a damn eerie presence throughout.

I wanted to like this more than I did… I did like it but it was… so awkward? I liked the concept- it just didn’t do it for me. I loved the representation, but did the intense focus on the representation take away from the magical supernatural aspect of the novella? At the same time I think If this book were not so queer I also think it might have been a 2 star read? Maybe I don’t know how I feel enough to actually leave a review. I just wanted more!!!! I will be continuing to read Killjoys work :)

$14.99 for a 125 page “ novella”….. that spends its time preaching about the power structure and capitalism. Lol lol good lord what a juvenile self-indulgent mess this was to read. An article on Crime Reads said this was one of the most terrifying books of all time. There were literally no scares here at all. The author of the article must get a fright every time they cross the street if they think this is scary. It wasn’t all hopeless, the casual queerness here was refreshing and the basic plot was a good idea that unfortunately was lazily executed.
