Glad I bought this as I'll be re-reading it....multiple times. Lots to digest, really loved the storytelling, the characters, the overarching themes. A lot of layers of comic goodness.

Beautiful art couldn't save a story too weird and dark for me.

The book has awesome body horror art and illustration — it truly makes the most of the comics medium, especially when lingering on the grotesque and violent.

Thematically, there's complicated family dynamics, religious fanaticism, and the interplay between nature and technology. While much of the world-building remains mysterious, we get glimpses of past catastrophes that led to this post-apocalyptic world ruled by the "New Vatican"—a fundamentalist religious order.

The characters leave strong impressions, particularly Axe, despite limited introduction time. The book takes bold narrative risks (
even though the main character's death scene is a fake-out, the decision to kill her "innocent" sibling instead shows real narrative courage
). That said, some elements do feel formulaic and trope-y to me.

While I enjoyed this read (and the beautiful art), I found the story somewhat difficult to follow: I'm not sure if it was the sci-fi aspect (since sci-fi isn't my forte, although post-apocalyptic has been a favorite genre in the past, a category into which this story also falls) or if it was something in the presentation of the panels: in some panels, I couldn't figure out what I was looking at. The religious zealotry of the story definitely hit close to home in our current times, and Little Bird herself is a compelling character to follow.

I may check out more of these installments in future, but I'd definitely be interested in a live-action or animated adaptation for the screen.

Gorgeous art and quite unique storytelling make for a great graphic novel that had me gasping over panels and story developments. This book made me very happy, as it speaks to my European heart on many levels.
