Goes to a dark place but pulls back out again

I had a difficult time with the first half of this novel because of the references to sexual violence or the usage of bodies in exchange of power or blackmail. It made me sick at a certain point, but I love Brittainy Cherry so I kept reading and I'm so glad I did. The second half is great. Everyone helps and fixes each other in such an amazing way. Great read, just beware the first half gets pretty dark.

Another deep emotional raw novel from Brittainy. What a journey Jasmine and Elliot went through. I really had a hard time with Jasmine’s Mom. Ray was wonderful! So glad Jasmine had her. I’m so glad Jasmine stuck up for Elliot. That she tried to be there for him. Hate what she felt she needed to do. Could not believe Todd!! Wonderful emotional rollercoaster.

There is something about a Brittainy C. Cherry book that just draws you in. I’m sure it is due to the richness of her characters and the powerful storylines. This novel is full of that. The journey that you will be lead on is full of angst and heartache. It is a touching tale of friendships, family bonds, passion and sorrow.

It is told in dual POV by Elliott and Jasmine. Their story starts in high school where they form an unlikely alliance with a promise of more. Circumstances change the course of direction for them, and it is six years before they connect again. They have both changed, and maybe not for the better. Until they each find their truths, they can not fully reach their HEA.

Even though I enjoyed this read, I can’t say it’s my favourite. For me, it was too angsty, and that might surprise some, as I like my angsty books. Whether it was my mood or circumstances I’m not sure but it didn’t quite feel like a winner for me. It didn’t flow collectedly as I am used to from this author. I like a little more humor to lighten it up and not be fully sad. I also love romance in my reading choices, but this one seemed excessive and slightly over the top and unauthentic. I may be in the minority with these thoughts and it won’t by any means stop me from reading more works from Ms Cherry.

*I received a copy for an honest review.

If you like those stories that rip you apart and put you back together, then you need this one. There have only been a handful of books that I felt more emotional about that this one. I swear I cried tears of sadness and joy all the way through this book. Honest, sloppy, ugly cry tears.
It's a gritty, real story about the things we do to deal with pain & emotions of disappointment from life and others.
Elliott is such a special character. One that will stick with me for a long time. I am such a sucker the book boyfriends who have flaws. Ehhhh, you could call them flaws, but I call them specialties. We need more respectful, good guys like this in the world today.
Finished this book yesterday and as I sit here trying to write this review, I am STILL tearing up. It's THAT good.

Sooooo good!!!!

Absolutely love it. As always when I read this author I ended the book with my heart full of emotions. I love how the story trap me since the first chapter and keep me want to read the next, and the next.... I was on tears on some parts of the story and really feel the pain that Elliot it’s suffering, the sadness of Jazz, but also all the happy moments when they both laugh and hold each other. I just don’t have enough words to describe how good is this book, I guess just tell everyone who read me to go buy it and read it.

Behind the Bars – this title means so much in this story, literally and figuratively. The dedication above just moved me. You are introduced to two old souls in Elliott and Jasmine, young in age, but so emotionally mature. You are going to need tissues when you read this, you will cry tears of joy, tears of pain and tears of love with this book. The comedic interaction with Jason and Elliott made me laugh out loud (got a few “Mom’s crazy” looks from my kiddos and dear husband) while reading, but I just ignored them. You will feel the whole gamut of emotions with this book. It’s so romantical! The friendship and love between Elliott and Jasmine is just phenomenal. Yes, there is sexy times, but the build up to that point is so much more! I can’t say more without giving too much away, but if you never believe anything else I say or write, believe this…..

GET THIS BOOK, READ IT, LET IT FLOW OVER YOU LIKE SMOOTH JAZZ….. you will thank me later! I promise!
