Not bad. Not bad at all. In this installment the reader gets more of Kinsey's background and history, specifically about husband number one. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. After reading A-N and only getting tiny bits and pieces of what makes Kinsey tick it was nice to get a bigger picture.
In "O" Kinsey's ex-husband, Mickey, turns up in a coma and the LAPD are sniffing around Kinsey in connection. Problem is she hasn't seen nor heard from him in about 14 years. Problem is the gun used on him is hers. This is too much for Kinsey to sit back and ignore so she dives into her own investigation of Mickey and what could have happened. The reader is introduced to a lot of people from her past life as a STPD and given some info on what makes her tick. Along the way she investigates the mystery and uncovers the truth.

Kinsey is getting more and more cowboy as her past relationships change from what she had previously decided about them. Guilt from ignoring or walking away from people who got to close to her in her past seems to fuel a rage to throw herself into her PI work years later when those folk come back. If I were a psychiatrist I'd say she has an attachment disorder. This book reveals more about the first marriage she had with a cop. She self-describes herself as starry-eyed and naive, but I think she got a divorce very fast and did not wait for a explanation. She married him because she wanted to be like him but left him because he was too violent in the job as a cop. The divorce was bound to occur but the speed at which she left was unfair. She REALLY hates being emotionally tied down. Age is giving her more knowledge and awareness of her behavior and she is grieving the person she is and trying to make some amends. At the same time, she is accepting of herself now and doesn't want to make the same mistakes she made unjustly in her past. Kinsey is a very human character. Kudos to the author for the realistic portrait of an evolving young woman.

I'm going through this series a second (some books third) time, but this is my first audio book with [a:Judy Kaye|531804|Judy Kaye|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1525282535p2/531804.jpg] as the narrator. I'm sure I'll get used to her, but I do miss [a:Mary Peiffer|585192|Mary Peiffer|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/f_50x66-6a03a5c12233c941481992b82eea8d23.png], as she is Kinsey Millhone to me. In general, I think Judy Kaye does a good job using voice to distinguish the characters -- except for Kinsey and Henry. She makes Kinsey sound much older than she's supposed to be and Henry sounds like a frail old man -- not at all the image I have in my head from the series up to now.

Everytime I read one of these books, I feel like I'm getting to spend some time with an old friend. Kinsey is just that kind of heroine. Here, we get to know more about her past including her time with her first husband who we hadn't gotten to meet before. I wish we had actually gotten to meet him in this one. He's in a coma for the entire book so we never actually get to see Kinsey interact with him which was a bummer. Still, I found the mystery here quite interesting and the ending had me on the edge of my seat. These books are just really well crafted and quite engaging.
