Grateful for this book, which allowed me to think differently about autobiography, and research, and what we're doing when we give our lives over to learning about other people.

i’m having mixed feelings right now

I was intrigued by the clever title of this book, and I have always loved [b:The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter|37380|The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter|Carson McCullers|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1385265834l/37380._SY75_.jpg|860196] but didn't know much about the author. This book provides helpful insights about her and about the author, along with thoughts on queerness and lesbians historically. The book really reminded me of [b:Why Fish Don't Exist: A Story of Loss, Love, and the Hidden Order of Life|50887097|Why Fish Don't Exist A Story of Loss, Love, and the Hidden Order of Life|Lulu Miller|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1565526670l/50887097._SY75_.jpg|71431307] in its storytelling style and of [b:Ace: What Asexuality Reveals About Desire, Society, and the Meaning of Sex|52128695|Ace What Asexuality Reveals About Desire, Society, and the Meaning of Sex|Angela Chen|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1580804471l/52128695._SX50_SY75_.jpg|73599792] in trying to understand different forms of sexuality from different times. I appreciated this book more than I enjoyed it.

I loved this. I'm definitely going to read Shapland's new essay collection.
