“On the cusp of the end, spiraling into the pits of darkness, and walking to realize death was just the beginning, is really trippy.”

I'm someone who literally only reads books BECAUSE OF chosen one bullshit and Gary Stus but there was NO intrigue in this!!! the sex scenes weren't even good!! somehow instalove??? the blood boss guy was all "everybody else clear out of the room I need to talk to the twink sea creature man who has recently come to our charge"
and then he's like "I had a dream about you"
and then there's blushing
and then they fuck
this was a few specific tropes with no connective tissue or substance.
there was a fight somewhere?? idek who they were fighting other than some people from the twink guy's bio-parents shit
there wasn't enough tension or suspense. somehow the stakes just fell flat.
also hated the whole "humans rarely do things for each other, why did this person stand in for his dad's debts?" like there's just so many loopholes there. is everyone really taking these debts out? why aren't there more indentured servants?
what did the vamps save humanity from??
it plays on so many ecofascist misconceptions to just assume I'm supposed to believe humans are so bad and never willing to do things for each other. like buddy all the problems in society can stem back to like,, the equivalent of like 5 guys. it's not actually 5 guys but basically it's 5 guys. the average human doesn't have the socioeconomic power to doom us all. what exactly was supposed to have happened here
like I could MAYBE excuse the plot issues if it made sense to me that it was meant as a porn with plot thing. but the porn was not even good. just all the expected top bottom stereotypes and nothing of intrigue.

Another win for Davidson King
I loved Jayce and Cain’s story. I can’t wait for the next book in the series. This a must read.

Reread with audiobook
I was so excited to read this that I only had 4 hours of sleep before going to work.
This story was captivating from the beginning, I struggled to put it down to do my work and other necessary things and it was worth it, my lack of sleep and all.
The world was not at I was expecting and I’m super okay with it. Humans are aware of the vampires and other creatures and they also know that when the final war happened, The Blood Boss and his vampires were the ones to save the humans and establish the balance in the world.
I liked this concept, this is not a complicated world to understand so I really appreciated it.
Cain, The Bloody Boss, is the First vampire to be created and also the only vampire who can stuff with his blood that others can’t.
Jayce is a foster kid left on the doorsteps of his current parents and thought that he was human and everyone else around him. Was I surprised to find out about this? Of course, specially since he is unique so it’s fitting that he falls in love with The First Vampire.
Jayce reminded me so much of Snow, everything about him is so precious. I LOVED HIM!
The only “problem” I had with this was their relationship growth. I feel like it needed more exploration about Cains past, we learned briefly what happened for him to turn into a vampire but I would’ve appreciated it more if it had his POV on how that day went and how he felt. Also more scenes on how they developed their feelings for each other, we had that but I feel like it needed more…
All that said, I gave this 4.5/5 stars. I LOVED THIS STORY, the characters and this world and I can’t wait for the next one!

Enthralling start to a new series.
I loved everything about this book. The plot, the pacing, the world building, the fantastic cast of main and secondary characters. I felt like I was pulled into the story of Cain and Jayce from the very beginning and had to keep reading until the very end.
Circumstances brought these two wonderful characters together and it was not love at first sight. Their romance seemed to sneak up on them, quietly bubbling along without them truly realising what was happening. All of this taking place whilst a huge threat was looming to shatter their known existence.
This is a fantastic start to the new series with plenty to keep you engaged. A slow(ish) burn romance, steamy scenes, villains to add some drama, vampires, witches, merfolk and a well earned HEA. All with the hint of more supernatural beings to be introduced.

Wonderful start to a new series
Edited to include the audiobook from Tantor Audio.
I enjoyed reading The Blood Boss when it was released in August of 2021. I received a copy of the audiobook a few days ago and finished listening to this afternoon. Wow, this is a series that will be an automatic pre-order in book e-book, and audiobook format. What did I like? Ang man with darkness in his heart; a cinnamon roll who is more than cinnamon and sugar.; several side characters I like, vampires, sirens, triton (guy mermen), sky gods, witches, and a universe aching to be explored. A universe that will include dragons. Dragons! What I did not like? Waiting for the next book. This was my first experience with Tim Paige and Declan Winters. They did a good job. Black Veil Series Book 2 is an automatic preorder.
Tantor Audio provided a copy of the audiobook in exchange for my honest review.
