As most books sit on my list until I can go into them with no expectations, I was prepared just to read some new stories. However, the introduction first drops a 'charming' story about the author walking up to a colleague's wife and calling her a c***, excerpts some of the most racial moments of the book, and then explains the very first piece is so private and difficult to follow that most people never finish it. Way to whet my appetite! I debated not bothering and then settled on starting at the second story. Here at the end I can say that was good preparation, because these are intense, inward, ugly stories. There's a realism that I appreciate, but I'm not running out to buy more of his work.

This collection of short novels displays the whole fascination of Oe's writing. Each and every one of the novels in a rather heavy read, the topics are quite dark and don't necessarily end on a happy note. However I have not regretted a second I spend reading this book. Oe's writing is passionate and pointed, grotesque and smart.

Cerita yang membuat kita mencari dan menemukan sendiri, sebenarnya apa akar permasalahan dari ceritanya. Ide cerita yang bagus.
Kurangnya mungkin hanya di cara penyampaian. Entah itu karena masalah penerjemahan atau memang seperti itu cara berceritanya.

Satu lagi penulis Jepang yang bercerita dengan baik dan enak saya temukan. Novela ini sederhana tapi sisi cerita ayah dan anaknya terasa menarik. Si Lelaki Gendut dan Eeyore saat di kebun binatang terasa menghangatkan hati.

Başıma gelecekleri bilseydim, Kenzaburo Oe'nin Kurbanı Beslemek'te yer alan üç öyküsünü peş peşe okumazdım; her ay birini okurdum. Burnuma dışkı, sidik ve ter kokularının dolmasıyla başlayan yolculukta yüzüme tokat üstüne tokat ineceğini nereden bilebilirdim ki? Tüm bunlar iyi anlamda tabii. Kenzaburo Oe, bana çok sevdiğim Marquez'i anımsattı. Bunu korkusuzluğuyla, gerçeklikle büyüyü harmanlamasıyla, güzellikle çirkinliği bir araya getirmesiyle ve insanların içindeki en karanlık köşeleri pat pat dışarı vurmasıyla yaptı. Ve her hikâyenin satır aralarında da farklı türlerde delilik, delilik, delilik... Ya da "deli" olarak algılananlar diyelim.

Farklı kültürlere ışık tutan hikâyeleri seviyorum ancak Kenzaburo Oe'nin daha genel, küresel bakış açısını da çok sevdim. Kurbanı Beslemek, Delilikten Kurtar Bizi veya Gözyaşlarımı Sileceğim Gün herhangi bir ülkede, herhangi bir toplumda geçmiş olabilirdi. Tabii ki spoiler vererek heyecanı mahvetmek istemiyorum, o yüzden şöyle diyeyim: bu hikâyelerde insanların geçmişten kaçamayışını, kendilerini ararken etraflarını gözlemlemeyi unutuşlarını, insanoğlunun hele ki güveni, kendini inandırdığı yalanlar yıkılınca ne kadar acımasız olabileceğini, yalnızlığın, dışlanmışlığın, farklı olmanın insanı nasıl deliliğe itebileceğini göreceksiniz. Kenzaburō Ōe's 2 novellas / short stories "Aghwee the Sky Monster" and "The Day He Himself Shall Wipe My Tears Away" left major impressions earlier this month. Both are meditations on death and grief and characters' memories and coping mechanisms through trauma. Children and childhood seem to play a role in many of Ōe's works, as it did in both these novellas - Aghwee features the ghost of a deceased infant, and "Tears" focused heavily on childhood memories of WWII.

Since I only read 2 of the 4 novellas in this one, I will be back to read the other 2 - the titular "Teach Us to Outgrow Our Madness" and "Prize Stock".

Tres cuentos complejos, donde la locura juega un papel crucial en la vida de los protagonistas y de quienes les rodean en cada historia.

La locura como insumo para soportar la existencia y sus desgarradoras consecuencias.

El hombre gordo que, mediante una suerte de fusión con su hijo que presenta discapacidad intelectual, sobrevive a una historia familiar vedada, ocultada por una madre que se muestra intransigente, quizás con el único motivo de cuidar el frágil sentido de la vida construida grosera y tiernamente por su hijo.

El segundo cuento, nos transporta al incómodo terreno de las reflexiones en torno al suicidio y los mecanismos previos de su ejecución, dejando el cuento con un sinfín de interpretaciones, que van desde lo real de la locura, hasta el radical momento donde esta es simplemente un ingrediente artificialmente creado para la concreción del fin de la existencia.

Por último, y especialmente complejo por su intrincado juego de recuerdos, sugestiones e imágenes alojadas en la alucinación, El día en que él se digne enjugar mis lágrimas·conlleva conocer la historia de Él, en relación a Áquel y su madre, un triangulo puesto en escena en los días previos y posteriores a la derrota de Japón en la II GM, con la finalidad de retratar narrativamente por parte del protagonista las justificaciones imaginarias que ha construido para dar firmeza y sentido a su vida. El relato es una suerte de navegación en una confusa y extraña sucesión de eventos que poco a poco se irán contorneando a medida que se acerca el final de la historia.

I've not yet read the 1st novella in this book. I may revisit it later. The 4/5 star rating is for the rest of this collection:

"Prize Stock": my favorite; a strange and powerful tale that really resonated with me. 5/5

"Teach Us to Outgrow Our Madness": strange is just the beginning here. But there is tenderness here too. The ending wasn't as satisfying as I'd hoped, but the writing is solid. 3.5/5

"Aghwee the Sky Monster": really good story. 3.5/5
