I'm not sure if it was the subject, or because I read it during a work week instead of a vacation (it's pretty dry stuff ;) ), but I enjoyed this one less than the other ones. I did like the Cleopatra/Anthony story, but I couldn't get interested in the Octavianus part, which was kind of a let down.

Perhaps the first thing to say is that this book is stand alone - you do not have to have read all 6 books of the Masters of Rome series that went before. As always McCullough uses the real (and imagined) events of history to give her story a gripping structure. And she develops her characters in a way that you can fully believe in. The vanity of Anthony and the extraordinary will power of Cleopatra are fully believable, as is the tragedy that gradually unfolds. Equally gripping is understanding the brilliance of Octavius who managed in his very early 20's to gain partial control of Rome, during the height of its power.
The book is a page turner - and if you do not know how it unfolds it will genuinely thrill.

Oh. My. Goodnes. What a slog! I never once had any compassion or connection to a single character in this story, least of all Antony or Cleopatra. The only sympathetic character was Octavia. And the dozens of name for each character! And sooooo many characters!
The story is filled with interesting historical detail, almost to distraction at times. This is my first novel by Colleen McCullough, and I don't know if I'll read another.

I do enjoy this series, although at times it's easy to get mired in the details. I think that's one of the things I like about the series though. Also, McCollough he does a great job of making you interested in what happens to thoroughly unlikeable characters.

Antony and Cleopatra (Masters of Rome, #7) I loved this beautiful tale.
Colleen invites us to unravel its intricacies layer by layer. It challenges us to confront the history within the story, suggesting that those who venture into this world may emerge with a changed perspective.

It took me 5 years to read the whole series. I took several breaks to read other things. I loved it so much. And arguably this last book was the best of them all. I am sad it is over.

Confession: Everything I know about classical history I know from reading Colleen McCullough. However, I've never been caught embarrassed by a stray "fact" stretched too far - apparently the history is solid enough to keep me looking clever! The characters in this book are believable, consistent, and the personalities given to them plausibly explain the actions they take (this is my personal criteria for good historical fiction writing).

Un adecuado final para la saga de Roma. Además permite empalmar suavemente con el "Yo, Caludio" de Graves.
