I like these simply for Cierco's wife. She is great. The series is great political theatre. Really well written. Good narrative in the audio.

Middle book

Bit of a middle book of three. The first half builds to a dramatic climax with the suppression of another conspiracy. Then it goes into a bit of a lull. You know that it will be building up to Book 3.

I highly recommend this series. Robert Harris has a way of writing about history and people that makes everything super interesting, even boring politics. This book, like Imperium, has many parallells to our time and public characters.

The follow up to Imperium it retains the warm, familiar feel Harris portrays of Rome and its residents. Cicero is older, wiser, more pompous with his success. Caesar, Pompey and Crassus still play their games. Very good follow up. Read with Pompeii these are a good set of roman historical fiction novels.

The maneuvering in this volume was a bit more subtle in places, and I found Cicero to be startlingly unlikeable at times. It was harder to keep up and stay engaged, but this is also a novel about downfall, so I suppose I shouldn't be too disappointed that the characters are in rough shape by the end.
