I really wondered whether Robert Harris could continue the same level of drama and interest as in Imperium, the first of the trilogy. While the character of Cicero develops, his position changes radically from one end of the story to the other, there is still a sense of continuity, that this is still the same man, with the same world view, the same principles and the same strengths and weaknesses. Excellent book.

Couldn't put it down! Although it started out sounding like a murder mystery, it turned into a political game which had me on the edge of my seat, and it's made me want to find out more about Cicero.

While the Rome series by Colleen McCullough will always be the singular masterpiece of Roman historical fiction, this story of Cicero is quite compelling. It's very interesting to me to see the contrast of McCullough treating Caesar as the hero while Harris treats him as the villain.

How someone can take such breathtaking events as the Catalina revolt and make them, well, dull to read, I don't know. Compared to Saylor, Davis, McCullough and others who set their novels in similar times, this was something of a yawn, and I skip read the last half.

A wonder of historical fiction, the ending delivering as much sadness as the first of the series brought hope. Just amazing an recreation of such a pivotal time in human as told by a master storyteller, the voice of Tiro.
