This one didn't grab me the way the first two books did. The Devlin / Kat plot is wearisome. I found myself wishing that Harris would just kill off the actress already. The constant sniping about Christians and hypocrisy also wore thin quickly. Surely there is some middle ground between "free spirits who flaunt every social more are always right" and "all Christians are secretly evil and nefarious".

I still think Hero Jarvis is one of the most interesting characters and I hope she plays a more prominent role in the next book or I will be bailing on this series.

This series has become my go-to when I want to just escape from everything else and have a very easy read.

They are murder mysteries set in the early 1800s in England. And really, the best word to describe them is "swashbuckling".

I have not read them in order, which is obviously my fault and many recommend you read them in order. I can see why they say that, but really, it's not totally necessary. It's only a little confusing but it's not insurmountable.

This one is a tad too gory for my taste - I almost didn't continue with it. It's not giving me nightmares though, so that's a good thing. The author writes well and the story line just keeps you wanting to read just one more chapter.........

I'd actually give this a 3.5. It was a bit ponderous through the middle but the action really picked up with a great big plot twist at the end. Made me really want to read the next installment to see how it ended. So, my advice is to plug on if it gets a little dull in the middle because the ending pays off.

With the proviso that I did enjoy the last two books of this series... this one did not do it for me. Perhaps it was timing, perhaps it was comparative to the female-protagonist books I've been reading but I feel like this was a weird book that left a yucky taste in my mouth. The mystery was quite gross - a couple passages turned my stomach.

I did not connect with Sebastian as much as I’d like... and I feel like the author decided she didn’t like the
Spoiler heroine so made it impossible for them to be together. I never understood Cat’s reluctance and felt oddly like the author reinforced she wasn’t good enough for Sebastian because of her past. It felt like shaming to me and left me with a gross feeling. Even before the oh suddenly they are related situation. Then she can’t even have a romantic relationship? Maybe I’m reading too much into it but I need a break. Maybe that was what she wanted but her whole character did not make sense to me.

Don’t get me wrong I didn’t like them together either but the way it ended was really dumb.
