Delightful! There is no better way to describe this book.
I bought this book because I love Alexis Hall's other books even though I wasn't sure whether I would enjoy this one as much. After all, the story is quite different from what he usually writes. Or so I though. I should have known that - while different - this book is still an Alexis Hall book. I found this book utterly delightful - a perfect mix of different and his usual tone. I loved it!

The writing is a little weird for me. I’m just not able to get into it. I like the idea of it. Girl on baking show falls in love. The BTS of it is very fun cause I love baking shows. But I don’t like either of the guys. Harry talks so weird I can’t get over it. Also the dialogue is so weird. Anyway I have to DNF.

Good fun! Well written and adore the reader (she read the Bookshop on the Corner series and I LOVE those). The characters are clever and have actual growth. The portrayal of a bi woman dating and having a child is really well done and I really appreciated it. Sometimes the characters were a bit...West Wing in their rapid, witty dialog. Which, honestly, I enjoyed. I didn't love how the love stuff worked out but did think it was the best outcome from the choices given. Good fun. I'm going to read the next one and maybe another by this witty author.

CW: experienced homophobia and biphobia, experienced sexual coercion, some physical violence

I really enjoyed the baking show elements of this book - it really felt like a central element of the story rather than a background for the romance. Rosaline's character was also pretty well-written and a joy to read about. I also loved how Hall is not afraid of making her flawed - she holds certain classist ideas at the beginning, and she has to put effort in questioning and challenging them. Another great thing about the book are the side characters and the found family they have.

What I'm a but iffy on is the love triangle. The execution was clever in some regards - for example, having the meet cute happen with Alain and then slowly making it obvious that he is a classist asshole who doesn't really listen to Rosaline was genius. However, I don't think he needed to attempt to coerce her into a threesome for me to understand how terrible he is at this point. Morevover, he monopolised the story so much that I didn't get to know Harry, the other love interest, as much as I wished. If this was marketed as a chick lit I'd be more forgiving of that, however, this is a romance novel, so Harry deserved more character development as the final love interest.

I’m so torn about this book. It needed 300% more Harry and WAY less Alain. I know you’re meant to, but I hate Alain SO so so so much.
