I wanted to like this book so much. I tried so so hard. This was recommended by Linda Holmes as a similar book to hers, Evvie Drake Starts Over. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find them more different.
Some good things about this book:
-Cute/funny references to a certain popular baking show
-Rosaline’s relationship with her daughter is sweet, caring, and lovely to read about

Some things I didn’t enjoy:
-The almost constant takes about anything social justice, etc. I respect and appreciate in the beginning that Rosaline stands up for her identity, but then it keeps happening. Almost every conversation has a point where Rosaline launches into a small lecture. I like the sentiment, but it is not enjoyable reading.
-The romance aspect didn’t grasp me (haha) as I wanted it to. I just wasn’t connected to the characters enough.
-Why would I want to imagine that the people behind GGBO are mean and all about money and curse every other word? I’d like to keep my false ideals that the show is all idyllic all the time, thank you

OVERALL, if you want a book with baking, romance, alright characters, portrayal of a single mom, and many discussions of the right and wrong things to say, this is for you!

Aww, this was so much fun. It actually made me start watching baking shows (for real), and now I can’t seem to stop.

I'm so conflicted. On one hand, I absolutely loved this! Very Me! On the other...
Spoiler As A Bisexual, I feel so tired when sexual assault has to pop up, especially in a romance. But, oddly, I think the reason it bothered me was because it was handled more seriously than other media has?? I hate how glossed over problematic to downright abusive events are in romcoms and the like. So seeing it treated this way was just a confusing twist to my otherwise positive feelings. ALSO I NEED MORE HARRY. LESS ALAIN MORE HARRY

Loved every moment of this. Pitch perfect treatment of the GBBO, a bisexual protagonist who falls in love with a man, a precocious Weird Kid, and it’s extremely funny. What a delight.
