The prose was absolutely fantastic. I was captivated by each character. But definitely a hard read.

I really wish that I could be a fan of this book because when I first read the premise I was really excited to read it. However, the more I got into the story the more confused I got some the story not only jumps through different timelines at random sections it also jumps through different perspectives of narration (between third person and second person). This made the book extremely hard to read and I just couldn't bring myself to focus on anything the words said since the sentences were lengthy and overly poetic to the point where this book would have been better written as a series of poems. The premise was really good and I really wanted to learn more about the history this book was based off of, but the writing style just wasn't for me.

However, if you are a fan of more poetic and symbolistic styles of writing then I definitely recommend this book!

A poetic wonder of prose, this powerful story weaves compelling characters with stunning craftsmanship

An exploration of love, paternity, loneliness, and religion on a southern plantation, with flashbacks to the richness of the tribal culture of the African homeland and a chorus of Prophets guiding the narrative.

Marked down for an excess of confusing, poetic sections that brought me out of the narrative more than I would have liked. It seemed like a slog to read at times and longer than was necessary.
