When I was halfway done with this book I learned that these aren't cannon and Brian Herbert is milking the franchise at this point so I'll just skip to the original ones lmao

I started reading this book because I wanted to understand what happened to technology prior to the events of Dune (and having read no other books in the series besides the first and part of the second).

I enjoyed this book, but don't like how it ended. I kind of wish it had ended with the final Erasmus chapter.

While I found the book slow going at times, the short chapters kept me engaged. I was actually rather invested in each individual's story.

I don't understand all of the negative reviews of this book. Sure, it is in fact not written the best and can't hold a candle to Frank Herbert's classic, original DUNE, but it does expand the Dune universe quite well! It does tend to go more in a space opera route rather than the poetic genius of the original book, but it was still very entertaining to me and did have some engaging characters. Erasmus, Agamemnon, Serena Butler, Xavier Harkonnen and Vorian Atreides were all really good additions to this universe and I'm interested in seeing where their journeys go from here in the other prequel books. My main complaint with this book is how certain plot points were repeated time and again, throughout the book. I felt that that was extremely unnecessary and found it perplexing that the publisher would let the book be released without further editing to omit such repetitive moments. All in all though, this was a really good book that explains some of the beginnings of certain elements mentioned in the original book, and I'm looking forward to starting the next book in the series, The Machine Crusade, which I am going to do right now!

If you come in thinking it’ll be like one of the six Dune books that Frank wrote, you’ll be disappointed.

It’s a fun glimpse of prequel events written in a brisk pace that is pretty standard sci-fi (with a little dystopian influence in there). I like that kind of stuff, so this was pretty much my jam.

Overall a solid read but it definitely feels quite divergent from the original Dune. I also find some of the choices it makes questionable at times despite enjoying it overall.
