OK, compared to Frank's run on Dune, this book straight-up sucked, compared to the average run of SciFi, this book was alright. There it is. Now having said that, I can't say I won't read the rest of the series. God, I love a pulpy series.

Dune: the Butlerian Jihad is my first foray into the Duneverse and I'm genuinely excited to see how the story looks from this vantage point. I know the general impression of the prequel series is less than favorable but I've actually enjoyed the deep dive and character development

I've read some of the other reviews and think they are well written and capture the salient points so I won't re-write the wheel here. I also would agree with most of them...i.e., there are weaknesses in both writing and plot.

That having been acknowledged, I still LOVED it and can't wait to read the next one!

This book ripped my heart out and made me cry, which is very rare for a book to do. If you love dune series or want to start reading them, this is a good starting point as it gives you more of an idea on how everything was before the book of dune takes place.

This isn't a bad book. In fact, I think it's a good book. But it isn't a Dune book. The writing style of Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson is vastly different to that of Frank Herbert. Combined with the fact that this is a prequel that take places thousands of years before the original Dune, it is almost unrecognisable as a Dune book, other than a few key buzzwords. If you remove the few chapters on Arrakis and changed a handful of words, you'd never know what it was a prequel to.

None the less, I enjoyed the book a lot and look forward to reading the remainder of the series, especially as it seems to add much context to Dune 8, the grand finalie of the duniverse.
