Another strong romance from this author. A second chance for a legally separated couple in the 1800’s. Who knew? Max, the impulsive artist had a reputation when he eloped with Isabella. After marriage, he continued his drinking & gambling, but surprisingly no cheating. He thinks he loves his wife, but not enough to show her that love. He’s in Paris, giving her a “vacation away from him” when she miscarries & it takes him a whole week to go to her.

It wasn’t hard to like the present Max. He’d spent the three years apart getting sober & changing his life. But Isabella has to want him to come home..or so he says. But, when an imposter burns down Max’s house, he basically moves in with her against her wishes. Or maybe not.

When I first read the synopsis & the teaser in the previous book I thought the premise was stupid. Turns out the execution was very poor as well. How hard could it be when the two main characters are obviously in love with each other? The story feels like it goes on forever and follows the EXACT SAME formula as the previous book (right to the final chapter when one of the main characters was almost killed)

This fucking ATEEEE. Jennifer Ashley is a god at writing the intimacy between people who are inextricably connected (and sometimes don't want to be!). There's this gorgeous cadence to this book where two people who love each other and hate each other and miss each other enormously are simultaneously each other's greatest allies and greatest fears. At this point, Mac and Isabella have been apart as long as they were ever together, and yet the ways they remain family?? The comfort they can find in only each other?? The way they NEEDED the time apart and yet they can never truly be separated? Stellar.

This book features the couple Isabella and Mac. They reunite after 3 years and 7 months of separation. This book is, undoubtedly, the best separated-couples-reconcile type of book I have read.

A realistic relationship (in as far as a romance novel qill portray), with people fighting and not immediately having make up sex, but rather hammering things out. Relations take work, and this series explains it beautifully.
Only down side, the second novel in a row in which there is an external menace to the couple, in the form of an unknown person attacking them, a bit too predictable

I don't know what to do anymore. Jennifer Ashley has become my crack (romance) dealer. It looks like I will be reading three of her series simultaneously...

I enjoyed this second book immensely. Since I fell in love with Ian and Beth from the first novel, I'm glad to say they fare well as supporting characters. Isabella and Mac are both solid characters and I was rooting for them to get back together.

I am a sucker for a good second chance romance trope in books and this is one of my all-time favorites. I love Mac and Isabella together and the fact that both of them remain faithful to one another even if they were legally separated. The protectiveness of Mac's brother towards Isabella was adorable. It was beautiful to witness their reconciliation and I know this book is one that I will obsess with forever and never get tired of re-reading.

This book was inoffensive, but pretty boring and a letdown after Ian's. I liked Isabella in the last book, and I wish she'd held on to more of her rich girl brattiness; she was a boring parago here! Mac's whole personality is painting and not caring about stuff. I don't know. It was a slog.
