The League of Regrettable Superheroes: Half-Baked Heroes from Comic Book History by Jon Morris

Not super deep, but still a fun read. Some of these are really whacky, and a precious few were actually intriguing ideas.

Affectionate and enthusiastic about its subject, and joyful in its execution, this book makes me long for many of the characters in it to be revived.

It's a good list and the author does a nice job of presenting the heroes, but it's boring and looses its charm pretty quickly. Maybe it isn't meant to be read in one go as I did, but this is (for me) a total skip.

The title says it all! This is the cream of the crap. I highly recommended this book for comic book nerds with a good sense of humor. The best part is, they're all real!

This book is exactly what it advertises itself as, a listing of a superhero character over the years that were flawed for some reason and have mostly been abandoned. And that’s the problem. It really a collection of short blog posts about individual characters bound into a book. It was enjoyable to see several comics that I personally seen before and even a few that I had collected, but that took me about five minutes of skimming. What I found more interesting was the parallels between the characters that failed and the ones that succeeded. For example, several groups also had a strong man character like The Thing from the Fantastic Four. Why was that? Is there a lineage that could be traced? I guess I was hoping for an overall narrative as to why these characters failed and others succeeded but all I got was pretty pictures and snarky text.

The writing was good though the puns were terrible and frequent. Very specific subject matter and mostly very ridiculous. Would only recommend to an avid fan of very obscure comics or a comics history buff.

Some pretty funny and interesting characters from comic history. Some of them sound like good stories like 711, but odd that it would be a superhero though. It was a fun read!

I think the most surprising was that I only remembered a couple of these characters - and there were a few I knew of that should have been in here. But it was a fun trip down a lot of bad decisions.

Well-written and occasionally laugh-out-loud funny, this book details some rather unfortunate comic book ideas from the Golden, Silver and Modern Age of comics. I had heard of a few of these misbegotten characters, such as ROM and Peacemaker and Prez, but many others were new to me, most likely because they only lasted a few issues, if that. Some of my favourites include Speed Centaur (a centaur whose secret identity is actually to dress up as a horse); Fatman (who can turn into a flying saucer); and Thunderbunny (a kid who can transform into a powerful superhero who also happens to be a 6 foot tall rabbit).
