Nice, short read. A beautifully written emotional rollercoaster. I liked the little twist, where the reader is the doctor helping her. The pages spoke so much in such little words. I really liked how realistic a lot of this was. It was easy to figure out the problems of the girls whilst also maintaining an idea on how and why Callie is struggling.

I felt that this book was missing more to it.
The ending, to me, felt like it was rushed and incomplete.

my friend gave me this book years ago, and i just got around to finally reading it. it’s short, so it goes by quickly which i was thankful for. at first, the narrator is quite annoying, the way she kept paying attention to all the things except what she should’ve been paying attention to, like the people around her trying to connect with her and even her own self. but i guess that’s kind of the point and much of the reason why she’s at this particular place at this point in her life. she doesn’t know or understand herself, even though she’s really observant. once it gets to part 2 and she begins opening up, the story and her get much more interesting and i started to get a clearer picture of her toxic family life and why she copes the way that she does. she becomes sympathetic. overall, a decent little story, though the nice and tidy way the story resolves felt too easy and trite. maybe i’m too much of a cynic.

Callie is a cutter: in order to avoid other issues in her life, she chooses to cut herself. She has been sent to a residential treatment facility, but she is choosing not to speak, not to cooperate, not to heal. Eventually Callie finds her voice and makes a choice for healing.
This is a short book, and a good book, but not an easy book to read. Again, as a former English teacher, I would place this book on my classroom shelf, if I had a classroom or a shelf.

McCormick's debut novel is a stunner. Painstakingly researched for three long years, this tale will leave you reeling. The dark psychological world of cutting is explored (as well as eating disorders and drug dependency) in a frank and honest manner. If I had a teen daughter, I would put this one on her TBR shelf.

This novel really hit close to home. In my late teens I used to cut. I think the author did a great job describing the pain and why teenagers turn to this as an escape. The scars do fade... I just wish this novel was around during that period of my life.

Gives perspective on what it feels like where the only solution to escape your feelings is to replace it with physical pain. An emotional narrative on different mental health issues and the struggles that come with it.
Moderate: Addiction, Mental illness, Self harm, and Suicidal thoughts
