This book makes me so sad. 😭 read with my middle schoolers. They thought the same thing.
Travis and his family adopt a stray dog. He helps them out. And eventually the dog gets sick. 😭

Read it to my six year old and loved it as much as he did. The "hydrophobia" scared him pretty good, but the rest of it was fine for him. If he were more sensitive I might hold off another year or two.

The language and prose were excellent. It was a very easy book to read aloud. The depiction of the time and place were as well. We paused a few times to find pictures or more information on the Internet.

I'll put this in my top 5 kids books so far.

A classic “boy and his dog” story, even though you know what happens to Old Yeller from the very beginning of the novel, you can’t help but feel what Gipson intends you to feel and enjoy the how Travis grows from a boy into a man.

Fun, though sad. Good, authentic writing, though Arliss is a bit of a terror.
