I like the idea, but it is not implemented in a well written way, or with interesting characters, or interesting action.

It was fascinating and disturbing to think of a future without electricity peopled by a population that remembered it. The whole back to the earth lifestyle could have had its charms, but there is dark foreboding over the entire narrative and power plays by violent strangers. Engrossing.

I really wanted to like this book, but I've rarely read a more pro-patriarchy imagining of the apocalypse. One of the main female characters had no lines that contributed to the plot and just cried every time she appeared on a page. Reading this with a feminist lense was wild. Every time they met an old lady she was described as "used to be hot". Imagining a better world after the apocalypse and it's just white men. I liked the pacing and it was interesting, but I'll probably skip the rest of the series.

OH YEAH and he said a group of injured men walked 15 miles, "with ample breaks", in 5 hours which... nah. If they were taking breaks they would have had to be jogging. There was also like the implications everyone was hotter since they lost weight in the apocalypse? Honestly the more I think about this book the angrier I get that I read it.

An intriguing but disturbing read about a time in the near future when a variety of catastrophes -- environmental, diseases, the bombing of major U.S. cities, etc. -- have led to the breakdown of U.S. society. In this society, a man tries to survive, find reasons to live, and bring order to Washington County, NY. I was disurbed by how plausible this scenario seemed. The plot of the book was not as interesting to me as the author's vision of what could happen to our world if we don't take better care of it.

A little preachy but still solid.

Disappointing. From all the wonderful review comments on the cover, I was expecting something original. It wasn't. Flimsy characters, living in a world that might as well have been late 19th century wherever. The characters were caricatures. I guess being set in America it was not surprising that the overwhelming themes were religion and violence and putting up with both of them.

Plus, spoiler alert - just before the end to introduce a random weird character who had no bearing on the rest of the book.

This is post-apocalyptic fiction ie Walking Dead minus the zombies. If this isn’t your jam, you probably should skip this book.
It focuses on what always fascinated me about TWD - how ordinary life had changed and glimpses of before and after. I really enjoyed this book.
4.85 stars - because I couldn’t figure out the timing and the treatment of female characters was super, super weird. I was happy to learn there are 3 more books in this series.
