World Made by Hand by James Howard Kunstler

Disappointing. From all the wonderful review comments on the cover, I was expecting something original. It wasn't. Flimsy characters, living in a world that might as well have been late 19th century wherever. The characters were caricatures. I guess being set in America it was not surprising that the overwhelming themes were religion and violence and putting up with both of them.

Plus, spoiler alert - just before the end to introduce a random weird character who had no bearing on the rest of the book.
