In this book, a robot named Roz gets stranded on a deserted island. She must brave the elements and befriend the island residents to make her new reality a home. Once she settles on the island, Roz faces her cryptic past. This book promotes community building.
Overall, this book is meh. I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I only read it so I could watch the movie later.

Read this because my student recommended this to me! This was such a sweet read. :) I found Roz relatable as an autistic person reading about her sort of learning how to mask, but in a different way. I loved the bonds she formed and the community she built. I loved this sweet book so much. ๐Ÿ’ž๐Ÿค–๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿชฟ

So cozy and endearing. I picked this audiobook because it was relatively short and I wanted to take a crack at the book before watching the movie; however, I was not expecting to be so attached to a robot and her gosling son. Peter Brown gave such life to this island and its cast of animal characters (special shoutout to the thespian opossum). I can't wait to read the other books in the series. Highly recommend it if you need good found family vibes. This book felt like a nice, warm blanket on a cold, dreary day - and I am not just saying that because of the impending winter storm that's hitting Houston in roughly 24 hours.

โ€œIf you stand in a forest long enough, eventually something will fall on you. And Roz had been standing in the forest long enough.โ€ - I'm including this quote just because I chuckled when I heard it.

This book is beautiful. Brought me to tears more than once reading it aloud with my kids. Canโ€™t wait to get the next one.

Does contain strong themes around adoption. Could be triggering for any kiddos with abandonment trauma.

This was delightful and Iโ€™d recommend for all ages (with some parental advisories).

The Wild Robot follows Roz, a shipwrecked robot, as she learns how to survive in the wilderness. At first, the animals are afraid of her and mean but eventually she makes friends and is accepted as part of the island.

The beginning events and writing make it seem like the book is a light read more appropriate for mid to young elementary, but there is something here for older ages. I recommend sticking with it if it feels too shallow for you as, once the story gets going, it tackles some meaningful, heavier themes. Overall, very wholesome but sometimes sad.

On the lighter side, Brown explores bullying, accepting people who are different, motherhood and family (chosen or otherwise), a little bit of climate change, and finding a sense of belonging and purpose within a community.

In the mid-range of heaviness, Brown looks at wilderness and the danger and death that comes with it. I loved this. I think Brown does an amazing job finding the balance between wholesome anthropomorphic woodland creatures where predator and prey are friends and the realities of the natural world (e.g., things eat things, wild animals suffer from harsh conditions).

On the heavy side, there are some brutal but delicately handled depictions of death, injury, separation of family, guns, and violence:
natural hazards killing and seriously injuring a couple animals, one human killing an animal, robot death and injury, robots with guns shooting at and fighting animals, serious life altering injuries for animals and robots
. Parents, I recommend doing a brief readthrough first depending on the age of your kid as it may be valuable to buddy read to help them process these parts.
