A fun book that was far too true-to-life about HR....

I love books about corporate/work/office life and the absurdity of corporate/work/office life and yet there are so few good ones. It’s hard to write a strong novel about how so many people spend their time. Joshua Ferris managed it as did Jessica Winter, Paul Murray and Michael Chabon. And now Jillian Medoff. This book felt incredibly real and revealing about who we really are and how we think and operate in professional and personal settings. I loved it.

This book was a different genre for me. Corporate setting but not a corporate plot. Not sure there was a traditional plot in fact. It was a character driven exploration of various roles in the work place. As a working person I already have all of the workplace anxiety I need and reading about it isn’t really my thing. The author used footnotes heavily at times then not at all for long stretches. It was jarring and not anything that couldn’t have been put into parentheses which would not have broken up the flow of the read. Was a sort of gimmicky writing style that I think should have either run throughout or been done away with altogether. It was like reading literary fiction but the author was torn between elevated writing and quirky beach read styles. Not my favorite.

Made me think about how much our work becomes a part of our lives with how much time and value we place on it and how it can blend into our individual identity. An interesting read for me now that I am working in corporate life, thinking about my professional development and navigating work relationships.

A bit slow in the middle, but made up for it in the end.

3.5 stars. A fairly quick read, an interesting glimpse into the corporate world. Nothing earth shattering but enjoyable
