This was a struggle. I am just not a fan of Melissa De La Cruz. She writes like an unlearned teen without even being able to translate anything that feels like Romance. A lot of these inner love monologues were gag worthy. I wish the brilliance that is Hamilton the musical didn't inspire this. This was just capitalizing on the hype.

The prologue wasn't even a prologue. All of that information could have easily been put into the bulk of the novel, so it already started off on a sour note.

The plot lacked action. The climax was strained against the truth that is history in order to just add unnecessary flare. And lastly, De La Cruz chooses the worst moments to start describing the landscape. You're in the middle of an action sequence; what are you doing!?! (page 292 then starting at the third paragraph on 293; then again starting with chapter 34 where on page 324 we again get interrupted by the landscape).

Entertaining love story of Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schyuler

Historical fiction, would make a good chick flick. First of three books about Eliza and Alex meeting , falling in love, and getting married.

3.5 stars, maybe? I was excited to read this one but it fell a bit flat for me.

This felt more like a history lesson than a novel, but after the slow prologue it reads quickly. Every time the author mentioned Alex was a ginger I did a double-take because the image of Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hamilton is so ingrained in my mind.

A good romance as well as a look into the lives of some prominent figures in American history. While my initial interest was in preparation for seeing an upcoming production of Hamilton, I found myself drawn back to Colonial America and fell for the Schuyler sisters! Hand to readers who want more Hamilton, who are looking for a good romance, or who like historical fiction.

closer to 3.5 stars but yeah- I enjoyed it, I will probably enjoy anything with the words Alexander Hamilton on them, as my favorite founding father, I personally enjoy everything about him; except of course the affair.

I have no idea why I read this. I wanted to, I won't deny that. It was relatively charming in its way (if WAY over-the-top dramatic at points - like the end), but it was also super historically inaccurate. Like how germ theory didn't exist in 1780? I don't mean to make a big deal out of it, but it was mentioned a lot and germ theory wasn't a thing until like a hundred years later, sooooo...? There was also a lot of horseback riding and, not that I'm an expert, but it seemed like the author had literally never been on a horse before so she over-researched to try and compensate? I know it sounds like I'm nitpicking but it seems like everything in this book that would come from research either wasn't researched at all, or over-researched and the author spent like three times as long as she should trying to parse it down for us when it was completely unnecessary. It was distracting, and happened so often that I never felt truly settled into the book.

I'm not normally a fan of YA Romance but this book is definitely aided by my recent obsession with Hamilton. It tells a slightly different story than the one you might know from the musical, but obviously it needed to be fleshed out more as the love story between Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schuyler is the primary focus. There are definitely some questions I have about historical accuracy, as the story conflicts with things in Hamilton, and that's not perfectly historically accurate either; however, setting that aside and appreciating this for the story that it is, I enjoyed it and plan to continue the series!
