I didn’t feel that much happened in this book. Felt very repetitive, and the ending seemed rushed.

All I can muster to say after enduring this soulless afterbirth of a book is-

Fuck all the way off, Moshfegh (insert middle finger emoji here).

- My dumbass thinking Infermiterol was really a medication (I am a therapist that knows some medications but clearly was "tricked" to think this was, lol)
- There is something so interesting about the writing that it was hard to put down sometimes
- I knew, knew what the ending was going to be;
The book was set in 2000, and knew it'd go into 2001 and it would relate back to 9/11

Essentially, the book is a character study around our narrator's Ego death. It's repetitive and crude, I almost felt like I was "watching" someone fall apart in a way that I shouldn't have been there. There's some good writing and it does emphasize how depression affects everyone around you, but it could have been done in a way that was more interesting and novel. It's definitely an uncomfortable read, though not necessarily a bad one.

While this wasn’t a masterpiece of a book, it was still very nice to read (even though a bit boring sometimes). The ending made it all worth it, even though you can guess it very easily in the first pages of the book.
I appreciated the narrator’s evolution, from her initial unreliability and selfishness to her acceptance of her parent’s death allowing her to improve as a person, only to have to deal with yet another grief at the end of the book.
I also appreciated the writing style. It kept the « boring » parts nice to read.
It was pretty relaxing and nice to, for once, read a book where essentially nothing happens diegetically. This book reminds us that the story isn’t the only element that makes a book good in the sense that you do not need a complex plotline and such things to make your readers feel intense emotions, convey a message etc.

Brilliantly written, just wish the last two chapters hadn’t been so rushed

Got me out of my reading slump, started to read on a sunny day outside and continued to read all through the night. Very intriguing. Read like a train.

I’ve heard people say this book was depressing, which I understand, but I did not feel sad after reading it. Really appreciated the honesty!

Guess you either love it or hate it, I loved it.
