Hello old friend. I can always count on Dexter for an entertaining read. This time with cannibals in the mix, a baby for Dexter, and the return of his biological brother.

This was still good, but rather forgettable in comparison to other Dexter books. Dexter spends the majority of this novel internally monologuing about parenthood and his newfound desires to have a better world for his daughter— even if that means giving up his extracurricular activities. Of course, Deborah somehow gets Dexter roped into yet another harrowing situation and we see a bit of gruesome action take place, but overall the storyline was a bit tame.
It was nice to see Brian again, but I thought the insecurities he brought out of Dexter were very unbecoming and a tad out of character. The end of the book also felt a bit like a deus ex machina moment— if you consider the Dark Passenger a godly figure.

All the Dexter books blend together in my mind, but this one was probably my favorite so far. Here we have some crazy vampiric cannibals and Dexter's brother making another appearance. The writing is getting less obnoxious which I appreciate.

This was weak for Dexter, despite the interesting storyline in here involving cannibalism (really, cannibalism! It sounds wrong, but it felt like a fun topic for Dexter to tackle). But, like with book 3, it's a non-Dexter that narrates this novel, as after the birth of his daughter he meekly tries to give up what he really is.
For most of this, Dexter flails about and seems to take a severe hit in the intelligence department as a result of him trying to behave better. There are so many obvious, stupid things he does that it just gets aggravating. The story in here is screamingly obvious at a lot of times, but it takes him longer than it really should to figure things out.
I did like the tail-end of this, especially the creepy scenes in the abandoned amusement park, but a lot of this just was weak. The elongated scenes involving him cooing over his new baby girl really didn't help matters any, either.
While Jeff Lindsay does a good job narrating, I was disappointed by the voice change on this. I'd gotten used to Landrum, and the mix of a meeker Dexter with a different voice tarnished the experience some.

#5 in the series. This book is better titled, Dexter Undone. The plot is slower and Dex is vastly different from his presence in the other books--- not bad, but different enough that it takes a while to find the groove. On to book6.
