This was not *bad* but it was not what I wanted - less a theory of why, more a blow-by-blow of what happened. That is probably fine for many readers but not what I was interested in.

I found this book very interesting and filled with a vast amount of historical detail. As other reviewers mentioned, if you are unfamiliar with 1930s German political parties and political figures, it's easy to get lost in the details. I found that I needed to continually pause and look up terms and names on Wikipedia to make sense of what was going on in the book. The book is very straightforward with more facts than opinions, leaving the reader to make any comparisons between the current day.

This is a very in-the-weeds, almost day-by-day recounting of the year leading up to Hitler being appointed chancellor. There's a lot of lessons to be learned in the breakdown of politics, the hollowing out of the center, and the fact of an aging President losing the ability to resist. It's definitely for those who are very into the power deals and backroom brokering of politics. If you're into that, this book is for you!
