good concept but he managed to fumble.. could go into heavy details but instead I’ll simply say that this is a great example to why i don’t like reading books written by men

I was not sure what to expect from this book, having picked it up randomly from the 'Librarian's Choice' shelf. I ended up reading it in one sitting. The story is told in the form of an exchange of letters (always an enticing structure) between a divorced couple. It is a story about karma, about healing, understanding, forgiveness, and closure. This read was quick, but incredibly intense and thought-provoking. I finished the book last night and am considering reading it again because I am still thinking about it.

a mostly peacefully meditative book sprinkled with moments of intense discomfort. miyamoto has a talent for portraying the psychological complexity of persevering at the very edge of despair. his despair is of neither the dramatic western variety nor the deadened modern variety but is instead almost Christian in its preoccupation with sin. based on just inhabitation and this book, i’d say this seems to be his theme. this, and random women saving trash men lol
for craft, i’d give this book five stars. beautifully written characters and a smooth epistolary format. for implied ideology, minus one star. it’s oddly suffused with the ridiculous optimism of a japanese person raised during japan’s economic miracle, and for all miyamoto’s skill at portraying the emotion and experience of despair, his suggested solution is not very good.

Aki și Yasuaki s-au căsătorit din dragoste, însă tragedia le distruge căsnicia: Yasuaki este găsit într-o cameră de hotel cu o altă femeie, care se sinucide și îl rănește grav pe bărbat. Iubirea dispare și timp de zece ani, foștii soți nu știu nimic unul despre celălalt, însă întâmplarea îi face să se reîntâlnească, iar această întâlnire îi încurajează să înceapă o corespondență.
Brocart de toamnă este o carte introspectivă, unde cititorul află, prin intermediul unor scrisori lungi, despre viața celor doi. Despre cum Aki se recăsătorește și face un copil, dar mariajul este aranjat și noua căsnicie nu-i aduce fericirea. Despre cum Yasuaki încearcă și eșuează să înceapă o afacere, fiind astfel implicat și într-un scandal cu Yakuza.
Stilul epistolar este intim și mi-a plăcut foarte mult felul în care cei doi încearcă să se reconecteze - de data aceasta, nu ca iubiți, ci ca niște prieteni foarte apropiați. Doar prin scrisori Aki și Yasuaki își deschid rănile vechi și sunt suficient de bravi cât să pună acele întrebări care i-au măcinat atâția ani.
Teru Miyamoto creează o poveste ce curge lin, despre două destine ce au avut ocazia să se întâlnească, pentru a se pierde pentru totdeauna. Regretul și tristețea predomină în scrisorile celor doi, dar aceste trăiri sunt însoțite de dor și de acceptare.
Aki este o femeie educată, dar care crede că s-a născut sub o stea nefastă și proiectează temerile ei interioare în toate relațiile pe care le are cu oamenii din jur. Yasuaki, deși un bărbat capabil, ia cele mai proaste decizii și acceptă, cu chipul senin, faptul că nu va reuși în viață. Aceste trăsături ale personajelor nu sunt deloc demne și admirabile, dar le oferă acea aură care-i face interesanți pentru cititor, stârnind compasiunea.
Brocart de toamnă e o lectură perfectă dacă vă doriți o poveste de viață, discuții filosofice despre timpurile demult trecute și dacă apreciați stilul epistolar.
