My teen son is in love with Japanese culture, so I read these short stories in order to decide if any would be worth reading and discussing with him. I was pleasantly surprised. They are high interest and easy to read, but at the same time they dig deep into themes of hurt, memory, love and loss, with growing as a person and figuring out who you are and why. It isn't just all surface action, the characters make you think and feel.

I love Yoshimoto's way of exploring different aspects of settings and characters: everyone of them feel so alive and are unique. I also love the way she puts tiny bits of unnatural and fantasy in each of her stories.

I actually rated each individual story based on content (not style as I love Yoshimoto's style and narration) and found the average which is what I gave for my review (the average was actually 3.583 but I rounded)
Newlywed: 4
Lizard: 2.5
Helix: 3.5
Dreaming of Kimchee: 4
Blood and Water: 4
A Strange Tale from Down by the River: 3.5
