More like a 3.5. Cozy, calm story at the beginning but then takes a turn with interesting historical parts that I was unaware of from Japanese history. A quick read that I mostly enjoyed, though it did drag in parts.

I found it difficult to write a review without spoiling the twists, but to sum up, this is a feel-good story about finding hope and friendship. The story also lingers around the impact of social discrimination towards survivors of Hansen's disease, particularly in Japan. If I have to put this book on one of the five stages of grief, it definitely belongs to the last stage: acceptance.

Sauitable reading if you're in the mood for:
❁ a good cry
❁ sweet & short read
❁ heart-wrenching, character-driven story

Beautiful and heartwarming

I chose this rating because I desperately needed to read the messages of this book. I needed to read about someone who was shunned and rejected by society managing to live a life filled with dignity, service, love, and sometimes even joy. I needed to read about a man who had made mistakes and suffered for them be able to find some purpose in his life. I also needed to read about the teenaged girl who brought her own problems, questions, and beautifully intense emotions to the story. It was interesting and sad
