Very engaging style. Infound the ending rather unsatisfying.

This was a re-read for me. I love Trevanian and read many of his books quite a few years ago. The depth of his characters is remarkable and the way he portrays Montreal in this book is unforgettable. The murder mystery is definitely secondary!

This Trevanian novel dealt with characters as much as with story line. The relationship between the older, more experienced, police officer and his young trainee is at the center of this murder mystery. The Main is an area in Montreal that is populated by derelicts, prostitutes, small businesspeople trying to eke out a living, and police officers trying to keep it all together. Trevanian puts the reader at the center of this place of hard-knocks. The actual murder is not solved till the last few pages and the author does not hint at all as to who the murderer is. It is a complete surprise and, for that reason, the suspense of this novel is relentlessly threaded throughout the entire story. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more of Trevanian.

Ένα νουάρ που φλερτάρει με την ηθογραφία. Ένα φόνος στο Μόντρεαλ του Καναδά είναι η αφορμή να περπατήσουμε με τον υπαστυνόμο Λαπουάντ τη γειτονιά του, τη Λεωφόρο, ένα πολιτισμικό χωνευτήρι όπου συναντούνται η ελπίδα και το έγκλημα. Μέσα από την αναζήτηση του ενόχου γνωρίζουμε τους ανθρώπινους τύπους της γειτονιάς και τις ιστορίες τους. Η υπόθεση χωρίς να περνά σε δεύτερο πλάνο, γρήγορα φαίνεται πως δεν είναι η κινητήρια δύναμη του βιβλίου αν και δεν χάνει από το ενδιαφέρον της. Το τέλος ανθρώπινο και ωραίο.
Το βιβλίο αποπνέει μια νοσταλγία αλλά κυρίως δίνει την αίσθηση του τέλους εποχής, καθώς το παλιό δίνει τη θέση του στο καινούριο τόσο σε φυσικό όσο και σε επίπεδο αντιλήψεων. Συνολικά μια πολύ αξιόλογη δουλειά.

3.5 Stars. Slow, a bit laborious but a solid, good read. Less of a who-dunnit and more of a description of the microcosm of Montreal in the 70s.
