This book works the same way as a train wreck: Unpleasant, but you can't look away. Not a single likeable character to be found, and I was waiting for the other shoe to drop the entire time. But it didn't, and that made the ending really underwhelming, unfortunately, as others have noted. The book would have benefitted from a more high-impact ending, as it really feels like this is what it's building toward. I highly recommend the audio version. It gets across the claustrophobic and uncomfortable atmosphere incredibly well.

This is so BRAT!!!

Seriously: If you are into BRAT GIRL SUMMER rush to read this!

Hurt people hurt people.

Und: EMMA CLINE, I'm coming for your other books!

I found this book painful to get through; I only continued it because I promised a friend I’d discuss it with them. From page 1, Alex is so clearly unlikable and uninteresting, and continues that way for almost 300 pages. There is little depth to her. You are given glimpses into her recent past, but you don’t get a good picture of why she is the way she is. What happened before age 20? She’s only 22 in the time that the book takes place.
Her unflinching focus on returning to Simon is not compelling - she spent so little time with him and given all the talk about her skill in getting things from people, why not another older wealthy man? Simon’s door was clearly closed. Furthermore, I felt no tension or anxiety in regards to Dom and his incessant texts and calls. We don’t get much information about him so what is there to fear? Alex clearly felt fear but the reader did not, and isn’t that the point of a self-proclaimed thriller?

A dark book following the spiraling descent of a young woman into further delusion and desperation. Little is shared about Alex or her past besides her experiences in sex work and manipulating and robbing johns, other sex workers, housemates and the closest she gets to friends. The book follows more lies and manipulation as she tries to survive a week bumming through an affluent community simultaneously running from and to hostile men. Some comments on class and mental health but ultimately not really my cup of tea. Fast read.

It was like the author got tired of writing and thought it would be clever to end as it did. It felt lazy more than novel. Characters were utterly pathetic, yet I failed to wrangle up even an iota of sympathy for any of them. What was the point of your book???
