I found this book painful to get through; I only continued it because I promised a friend I’d discuss it with them. From page 1, Alex is so clearly unlikable and uninteresting, and continues that way for almost 300 pages. There is little depth to her. You are given glimpses into her recent past, but you don’t get a good picture of why she is the way she is. What happened before age 20? She’s only 22 in the time that the book takes place.
Her unflinching focus on returning to Simon is not compelling - she spent so little time with him and given all the talk about her skill in getting things from people, why not another older wealthy man? Simon’s door was clearly closed. Furthermore, I felt no tension or anxiety in regards to Dom and his incessant texts and calls. We don’t get much information about him so what is there to fear? Alex clearly felt fear but the reader did not, and isn’t that the point of a self-proclaimed thriller?
