I enjoyed reading this book, but the ending felt a bit unsatisfying. I don't think that's the author's fault, or at least I think she succeeded at doing what she wanted to do - create a story centered on a character who refuses to grow or take accountability for her actions, who uses people and discards them, and who is nevertheless fascinating and even a little sympathetic in the ways she has painted herself into a corner. Still, when it ended, I felt like I had read a beautiful - and cruel - nothingburger of a book.

soooooo underwhelming. we never get any insight whatsoever into alex’s past or how she ended up in this mess. she keeps making the worst decisions possible. the whole thing felt completely hollow and i didn’t care what happened to any of the characters at all. sometimes the writing was good in terms of flow and composition but that’s about it

i liked this one a lot. the dark twist on a hampton summer was really unique and enjoyable. i’ve always been a fan of emma cline’s writing style, and this lived up to expectations. my favorite parts of this book has to be the unreliable narrator voice and witnessing the insanity of  how alex manages to move through so many social circles so effortlessly

LOVED this. unfortunately the ending didn’t quite have the same juice as the rest of the novel. still, I was on the edge of me seat. Thank you problematic female character 💕
