Well written, good information. One little issue, bears don't hibernate they torpor but as most people use hibernate it's fine. As a bear keeper I really enjoyed this book.

Pretty surface level with some hints of Orientalism, but I did learn a thing or two and ultimately got very upset

This book is fairly short but has 8 chapters dedicated to each remaining bear species. It is very informative of each one's current status and population. The author traveled to their respective territories to try and see them as well as what impact people and the environment have on each one. I listened to this book and would recommend reading it as I feel I missed some details. Especially the chapter on the sun and moon bear bile situation in Vietnam. Yes, I did say Bile. As expected, there were some very heartbreaking treatments of several of the species. But I think it's good to stay informed but did have the gut wrench more than once. The author can be very descriptive.
Graphic: Animal cruelty
Moderate: Animal death, Torture, Medical trauma, and Injury/Injury detail

A quick and interesting read, I just would've liked maybe 5-10 more pages per bear to really dig into their day-to-day lives in the Anthropocene.

This book was just not good 🤮🤮🤮🤮 These ratings are the epitome of the appraisal of White women mediocrity because huh??? 1. What was the point of all the anti China rhetoric. It was extremely forced. Like I'm so curious why she chose to write this book? It would've been much stronger if the focal point would've been within turtle island. Most of the places she went she didn't even end up seeing a bear and if she did it was locked up (?) I cannot believe nearly half of the book was just her commentary visiting the place and shitty geopolitical commentary. As other reviewers have said there's racially coded commentary as well. Also very very weird comments about that one dude teaching the panda bears about the bird and the bees... creepy. The black bear chapter was by far through strongest for me. The grizzly chapter she insists that she needed to interview the trophy hunter... no, no, no do not recc
