I am not a big Jane Austen girl but I genuinely enjoyed this Pride & Prejudice retelling. I liked it a lot more than the previous book in the series (Emma), likely because I didn’t find anything so objectionable (I struggled with the Emma/Knightley age gap). The storytelling was well done and the modernization felt right - you could see the connections to the original but the story felt right at home in modern times.

In this modern retelling of Pride & Prejudice, the Bennet family are reimagined as native Long Islanders who run a bakery in the Hamptons. When Darcy and the Bingleys (plus the perfidious Tristan) blow in for the summer, it upends their lives. This is the second in these authors’ Austen series (after Emma of 83rd Street, which I loved) set in New York, and I love how creative they are with the reimagining of an Austen cast of characters in present day New York. No spoilers but Mary is an environmental activist who gets arrested! Very well done and worth a read!

The authors made this story their own, but also kept with what makes the story a classic. The characters and the setting really came together to give us a wonderful retelling of Pride and Prejudice. Even though we know how this story should end, I enjoyed seeing what was next for the characters and how the authors were going to bring it together.

This is going to be a reread for me, I can tell. I loved how it was done.

This is the second book in the For the Love of Austen series. While characters from Emma of 83rd Street appear in this book, it does not need to be read first.

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

A big thank you to @audrey.and.emily and @gallerybooks for this arc💖.

✨What it is about:
This is a modern retelling of Jane Austen’s classic Pride and Prejudice. It is set in the summer, and follows Lizzy and her four adult sisters who all reside with their parents, the Bennetts in East Hampton. There they encounter Charlie Pierce and his grumpy friend Will Darcy, and well, things definitely get off to a rough start…✨

💭My thoughts:
If you are familiar with Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, you know the game of enemies to lovers is strong in this story, and since that is one of my favorite tropes (if not my favorite of them all), I was so excited to read this. Though I did enjoy the first book in the series, Emma of 83rd Street ( 5⭐️) a bit more than this one, this was still a very good and entertaining story with lots of wit and charm, that kept true to the original for the most part, and incorporated some fun modern twists I enjoyed. I found Lizzy’s love of surfing to be a very original take for her character, and the role that it played in the development of a relationship with Will was one I appreciated. I also liked that true to the original, Lizzy still loves to read, but in this case it was fantasy, so fun! The Bennett’s modern drama was unique, and even funny to me at times, I mean an influencer, an entrepreneur and an activist/environmentalist?! A baker and an MLM junkie? 😂 Who would have imagined? These ladies definitely know how to put a modern spin on a classic, and I’m looking forward to the retelling they write next. Overall this was a well done, and definitely a fun summer read!

I’ve admittedly never read (or watched) Pride and Prejudice, so I can’t comment on how this worked as a retelling. But much like Emma of 83rd Street by Audrey Bellezza and Emily Harding, this completely stole my heart on its own!

The East Hampton setting added such a fun, beachy vibe to the story, especially with the surfing element woven in! The Bennet family was loud, chaotic, and absolutely lovable. Mrs. Bennet, with her boisterous personality and quirky side hustles, was a riot. But despite their strong family bond, Elizabeth feels trapped in the family bakery business, unable to fully pursue her dream of becoming a journalist. I loved watching her take charge of her own life—and unexpectedly find love with a certain wealthy businessman from out of town.

Will Darcy—irresistibly arrogant yet completely misunderstood—immediately gets under Elizabeth’s skin. The addictive tension between them, simmering beneath their mutual distaste, kept me smiling the entire time. Watching Will slowly unravel his feelings for Elizabeth, so distracted by her that he can barely function, was easily my favourite part. I can’t wait to read more from this author duo!
