This was a very good and deadly description of war. And very funny but somewhat boring at moments, couldn't attach myself to the characters like in the previous books.
Definitely my least favourite of The First Law series l, but looking forward to the next !

Started out on shaky ground for me at first. If Abercrombie didn't have my trust already I might have DNF'ed this... But almost as soon as I thought that it picked up and I could scarcely put it down. Shivers is a bit one-dimesional in this but otherwise some of his best character work. Abercrombie is a master of his craft.

2013- This is easily one of the best fantasy books I’ve ever read. Best read as part of the series but incredible even as a stand alone. I can’t recommend this enough for fantasy or military minded readers.
2020- I've often looked forward to returning to this book. After 7 years I finally did. It's great and a pleasure to read though fittingly it doesn't shine QUITE as bright as memory held it. It's a hard toss up between this and Best Served Cold. Both fantastic reads and worth every moment. This story is about as good as you'll get in fantasy military storytelling!

"I love you so much I want to shit". Whoever said grimdark cannot be romantic fiction as well? I fucking love Bremer dan Gorst.

Joe Abercrombie is something like the James Ellroy of fantasy books: a lot of bad things happen for sometimes arbitrary reasons to people who might not deserve them just because. He's got a great attention to dialogue that puts his novels miles above the competition in this genre.
I read an advanced reading copy of this book so I'm not really 100% if my experience would be the same as if I'd gone to a store and picked a new one up in person. There was some awkward phrasing here and there and there were a few typos but that's to be expected I guess. I also made the mistake of reading this book out of order - Best Served Cold comes before it and there are some spoilers involved.
Overall it's a great read though nothing that will make you feel great about the world. It's not intended to be that kind of novel, though, and it would be worse for the attempt.

This book was gripping. A bloody war story told from both sides, with about 30 different POVs. Maybe the epitome of grimdark fantasy? Highly recommend Joe Abercrombie's books. Easy 5/5 stars, the best book I've read so far this year.

Una historia de guerra con diferentes POV de personajes completos y entrañables. Un grimdark, que si conoces las tramas comunes del género de fantasía, Abercrombie te sorprenderá con twist inesperado de la premisa.
Una joyota!
