CW: mentions of depression and suicide

“You were born worthy of love and you remain worthy of love. Be kind to yourself”.

Matt Haig does it again with The Comfort Book. These notes, split into four different parts, come in all shapes and sizes but each note still finds a way to be uplifting and inspiring for the reader.

Each page brought on a new note, whether it be a quote, a recipe, a list, or an anecdote from Haig’s life. Each page makes the reader think introspectively on how the world affects them, and why the world affects them. This novel made me hope for my own future, and helped me be grateful for the life that I live.

This novel was the type of book I keep on my coffee table to leisurely read through when I need something uplifting. It is the perfect palette cleanser after a heavy read, and I recommend that everyone finds their way through this book.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It gives advice and tells real-life experiences on mental health struggles. It includes a number of poems, quotes, book recs and song recs. This book is really heartwarming but it does discuss some very dark topics so definitely check TW/CW !!!

Filled with short chapters and many small aphorisms, I wished I hadn’t listened to this one as an audiobook because I felt like everything went by so quickly without having a chance to absorb it. Matt Haig as a narrator though was great—what a voice!

I loved this book and the premise behind it, however I think it is best read slowly. I read this in about 5 hours and whilst the writing was excellent, the messages all blend into one. I think this is best read by dipping in and out of the book as and when you feel like! That way, it makes the messages more impactful. It's very similar to Reasons to Stay Alive by the same author in terms of it being semi-memior semi-self help(esc). Overall really recommend!

The Comfort Book is a manual of reflections, philosophies, and wisdoms from author Matt Haig's own experience with mental health. Offering hope, and letting you know you're not alone.

I gifted myself a copy of The Comfort Book because Matt Haig's previous work had resonated with me, and his approach to talking openly about mental health is something I appreciate. This book is like a hug, oftentimes offering random tidbits of information, hope and encouragement. The fact the author so openly shares about his own journey with mental health makes this work so much more inviting and welcoming. True to its title, I found this book highly comforting.

This book may be little, but it's definitely powerful. A book I'll return to on the tough days. The magic is in the structure, for you can easily open to any page, taking what you need, and coming back time after time. And can I take a moment to appreciate the cover. It alone is a breath of fresh air. This would make a lovely gift for anyone who may be struggling or when you want to celebrate the miracle of being alive.
