To get the big picture you have to read the whole book, but The Dead is good all on its own.

Nice set of short stories, well written, but the ""true"" meaning is absurdly hard to figure out on your own, you basically have to read these with a companion.

Ritratti di gente comune, personaggi cupi, senza passato e senza speranza, affogati in una ignoranza ancestrale e in una religione che è l'unico svago e quasi un vizio, dato che sono del tutto privi di qualsiasi vita spirituale.
Un ritratto tragico dell'Irlanda degli inizi del secolo, che non si riscatta nonostante un nascente nazionalismo, che anzi, è una nuova occasione di isolamento e involuzione, piuttosto che un recupero di un'identità da presentare al mondo.

I don't hate this, but i definitely don't love it.
Honestly Joyce just makes me feel stupid as heck because I read his stories and im like 'okay' and then i go to class and Malcolm tells me what it ACTUALLY means and then i feel like a failure as a reader
basically to read joyce you need Malcolm (or any other professor whose studied Joyce for literally 25+ years) to hold your hand the entire time or you're not gonna fuckin get it

"You know, I'm no art critic. But, I know what I hate. And I don't hate this."
Montgomery Burns
I almost expected to after reading Portrait of the Artist in high school (why??!!). But, I really liked it. It may sound odd because Sherwood Anderson has been totally eclipsed by Joyce, but it reminded me of Winesburg, Ohio. So, if you liked that...

Interesting. Very skilful writing. Focus on character and location. Not a great deal of actual 'story' but quite compelling nonetheless. Some unusual turns of well known phrases and some historically fascinating behaviours. Very odd what passed for a balanced diet in 19th century Dublin.
