Prachtig verhaal. Het duurde even voordat ik er in zat, maar daarna wilde ik niet meer stoppen met lezen. De personages zijn voor mij echt gaan leven tijdens het lezen van dit boek.

At night he “dreams he’s being pursued. The usual dream. He’s running away from someone he never sees, but whose hot breath he can feel on his neck.”
Running from both his family who has betrayed him and the bailiff who is desperate to find him, a young boy finds safe haven with an old goatherd. But his trials seem to never end.
This was a tough read, but had moments of beauty and hope in the relationship that the boy and the goatherd form. I was surprised and challenged by the lessons the goatherd tries to bestow…even though he rarely speaks. There is so much evil, death, and destruction fighting against the boy, yet in the face of betrayal the goatherd encourages the boy, “He, too, is a child of God.” That will stick with me.

Rich book about friendship between unlikely people. The way Jesus shows us the people, the scenery and the relationship is very rich and easy to picture. A bit pretentious here and there, and the position, background of the old man are a little bit too much in the unknown.

Comencé este libro sin saber qué esperar o sobre qué iba exactamente y pedazo de western que me he encontrado. Es crudo y violento, pero también tierno en ocasiones. Ha habido muchos momentos en los que me ha tenido con el corazón en un puño y en los que he sufrido por la expectación de qué iba a pasar a continuación. Tremendo. Y muy recomendado para los que quieran disfrutar de un western español.

Waw! Waw! Waw! Met het boek "Intemperie" ("buitenlucht" in het Spaans) zet Jesús Carrasco een ijzersterk debuut neer. "Intemperie", in het Nederlands vertaald "De vlucht", is zo een boek waarin met een minimum aan conversaties een maximum wordt gezegd. Een bijzonder origineel werk, niet alleen door de geringe dialogen, maar vooral door de setting (een streek met bijzonder harde levensomstandigheden (droogte e.d.) in tijdsperiode waar de lezer het raden naar heeft)- de intense, realistische fantastische beschrijvingen van de omgeving en de beleefde emoties en door het feit dat geen enkel personage bij naam genoemd wordt. In 221 intense bladzijden werd niet alleen mijn woordenschat Spaanse adjectieven verviervoudigd maar werd ik vooral meegesleurd in een hard, ontroerend verhaal over een jonge jongen die van huis wegloopt en naar "het noorden" trekt. Tijdens zijn trektocht door de grote droge vlakte komt hij een geitenherder tegen en een fragiele vriendschap ontstaat. Een wankele relatie waar eventueel wantrouwen moet worden overwonnen omdat ze elkaar nodig hebben. Hoofdstukken waarin vriendschap, doorzetting, wraak, liefde, hulpeloosheid, onmacht, woede hoogtij vieren volgen elkaar op. Met bijzonder weinig dialoog maar des te meer beschrijvingen leeft de lezer mee met het pad van de twee trekkers…. een adembenemende tocht die godverdomme onverwacht eindigt en je met kippenvel achterlaat.

Es dura, durísima. En un momento dado tuve que dejar de leer, pues no podía más de la tensión, la mandíbula apretada, el estómago hecho un nudo.
Intemperie cuenta la historia de un niño que se escapa de casa, que huye de su casa más bien, y se esconde en un hueco en la tierra para que no le encuentren. Es un niño de pueblo en una época desconocida, aunque se intuye que fuera los años cuarenta. El niño emprende su huída en cuanto puede, saliendo del agujero en el que se ha escondido, y apartándose de su pueblo a marchas forzadas, sin pensar en lo que pueda encontrar más allá, en lo que pueda venir después.
En esa escapada tropieza con un pastor y sus cabras. El cabrero es un hombre muy mayor, artrítico, poco hablador, que se limita a darle de comer y de beber sin hacer preguntas, sin pedir cuentas. El niño y el cabrero siguen camino juntos sin contarse nada de sus vidas, pero el cabrero sabe mucho más por viejo que por diablo y sabe que el niño oculta algo. Y le esconde cuando viene gente. El cabrero hace suyo el miedo del niño cuando se da cuenta de que el alguacil le anda buscando, pero no por ello le traiciona.
A medida que avanza la historia, y sin que apenas se nos dejen ver atisbos de la vida del niño en su pueblo, una se va imaginando las razones de su fuga y la historia se va volviendo más y más tensa hasta el duro desenlace final.
Jesús Carrasco hace en esta novela un alarde gramatical y de vocabulario que para sí lo quisieran algunos premiados con el Nobel. Te da un máster de palabras en desuso y casi olvidadas. Me ha recordado a Miguel Delibes, la verdad. Y la historia es tan inquietante, tan tensa como el mejor thriller de acción, como la mejor de las novelas negras. Un libro para leer siempre y cuando no estés de bajón, tristona, deprimida. Altamente recomendable a pesar de su dureza.
