So THIS is we're all the pirate stereotypes come from. Ragged clothes, peg legs, crutches, eye patches, parrots. Treasure maps and searching for treasure. Skeletons, ghosts, curses, and violent threats. Entertaining.

Pretty good book! Of course there are things that didn’t age well, given this book was written in the late 1880s, and much of the plot development came from Jim overhearing conversations… which is not my favorite plot device.

Well. I finished it. To be honest I was lost multiple times in all the ship language and even the pirate language. But I was determined to finish this.

I read this book for my book club, and I have to say I really enjoyed it! Usually I don't like classic books, such as The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton or Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie. They just seem so dry to me and it feels like I'm wading through mud to finish them. Although it still felt a little dry at times, I thought the pacing was much better in this book than any other classic I'd ever read. Perhaps it was just the fact that Treasure Island had more action in it than most of the classics I've read. Whatever it was, I enjoyed reading this novel a lot more than other classics I've read over the years. There was one thing that hindered my enjoyment of this book, however, and that was the sailing talk. I live in a landlocked state, so I don't know the first thing about sailing on a boat in the ocean. Because of this, there were a lot of terms that were unfamiliar to me. Also, the way the pirates talked sometimes confused me as well. I suppose that this could be contributed to the English language evolving through the centuries, though. All in all, I enjoyed this book a lot, almost as much as I enjoyed reading his poems in A Child's Garden of Verses.

A really accessible read for a classic, and the humour was reminiscent of ‘The Princess Bride’ which I loved. The chapters were also really short and the story didn’t drag at all
