Lyrical, a meditation on knowledge and truth and literacy, and the effects of technology on all of them. Very much a product of its era with whiffs of 1984 and Logan's Run striking me most directly upon finishing. Very strong characters, even when those characters might not be human, and very well positioned at different parts of the spectrum of the argument around humanity and human nature, and where knowledge, and especially reading and writing, makes one fully human, and what can be lost if literacy is lost. Very important in it's own time (1980) it's sadly only increasing in relevance in 2024.

Such a fascinating novel, but I would have loved it so so so much more if there was less from Paul’s perspective and more from Spofforth‘s. But there are some genuinely interesting and unique takes on robotic morality and existence. One thing about me, I love androids who have a fascination and desire for death. The most annoying part of this book is the constant male perspective about how horny he is for any nice woman. Spofforth for the win.
