La historia me parece excelentemente contada, se lee con agilidad y se encuentran ecos de El hombre bicentenario (si este fuera suicida), Un mundo feliz de Huxley y Farenheit 451 de Bradbury. Empecé detectando un cierto aviso sobre el ecofascismo, pero conforme avancé en la historia, y viendo al terminar el germen de esta novela para el autor, no dejo de ver una cierta tecnofobia y un antes-estábamos-mejor (defensa de la familia nuclear por encima de otro tipo de relaciones humanas, las nuevas tecnologías traen atontamiento, etc) que hace que no le dé 5 estrellas. Aún así, es muy recomendable y la evolución de los personajes y cómo el autor va haciendo el worldbuilding a lo largo de la novela esta muy, muy bien.

Sata tai kaksisataa vuotta sitten (kukaan ei enää osaa lukea, joten historiaa ei enää tunneta) ihmiskunta saavutti vapauden. Lähes kaikki työt pystyttiin antamaan roboteille, mikä vapautti ihmiset elämään oman päänsä sisällä. Syvällinen vuorovaikutus muiden ihmisten kanssa oli moraalisesti paheksuttavaa, ja varmuuden vuoksi se oli myös tehty rikokseksi. "Pikaseksi on parasta." Kaikkea tätä valvoi robotti, joka halusi kuolla.

T.S. Eliotin runo Ontot miehet on ehkä toiminut Walter Tevisin innoittajana. Ainakin sen loppusäkeitä lainataan usein kirjassa ja ne kuvaavat täysin sen tunnelmaa.

Kirja on kirjoitettu 80-luvulla, ja se on hyvin kriittinen popkulttuurista, individualismista ja psyykelääkkeistä/päihteistä haettua mielihyvää kohtaan. Varsin ajankohtainen siis nykyäänkin. Kirjan lopuksi mieleeni jäi vahviten kuvaus vaivihkaa autioituvasta ja umpeenkasvavasta New Yorkista ja sen eläintarhasta.

A little slow and drawn out in some parts and too fast in others. I would’ve loved for Annabel to be a bigger part of the story, but I see how that could’ve changed the tone of the ending.

Very thought provoking. This was a Levar Burton Book Club pick that I would not have selected on my own. I enjoyed it. It gave an interesting perspective on society.
