None of This Would Have Happened If Prince Were Alive: A Novel by Carolyn Prusa

Format-audiobook (physical tbr)

Ramona has a category 4 hurricane headed her way and that is the least of her problems. Between having a toddler that is impossible to potty train, a boss that acts like a child, and a husband that is having an affair with a parent from her son’s school, she has enough on her plate. I don’t currently work but as a former full time employee and full time mom, I found myself relating to a lot of Ramona’s stress trying to balance her life.

While the title of this book is kind of silly, if you have ever had a celebrity you were attached to pass away unexpectedly, you can understand the weird pseudo relationship that exists between people and celebrities. I also applaud the author with the way this book ended. There were some things that were left kind of open that I don’t think everyone will agree with but I really enjoyed jt.

I was looking for an easy read, and this was recommended by the Ask a Manager lady. I guess I’m past the mom-lit stage of my life, I couldn’t relate the main character and her choices seemed appalling. Plus, DID THE GUINEA PIG HAVE NO WATER THE ENTIRE BOOK?!? She dropped the damn cage and broke the water bottle near the beginning and then ZERO MENTION OF REPLACING THE BOTTLE.

This was not a light-hearted book.

The best part about this book is the absolutely truthful way Prusa writes Ramona as a mom trying to keep her shit together in the face of everything going to hell. It's been the most realistic portrayal of parenting I've read. As a Gen-Xer and a parent, I could appreciate Ramona 100%. Also the Prince references are on point.

This is the story of what happens when the mental load goes ignored, by both parties of the relationship. It is also the story of finding yourself again as a mom and wife.
