Every word felt so deliberately chosen, so weighted. It was heavy, and provoked awesome, heavy feelings. I learned, loved, and was blown away by everything this book had to give.

This novel redefines what it means to be a masterpiece. I know I give 5 stars to a lot of the things I read….but I do not use the word “masterpiece” lightly. One of the most assured triumphs I have ever encountered. I just can’t believe it. It’s incredible in every way.

Jesmyn Ward is, undoubtedly, the best to ever do it. The way she writes about the South and about the people in it…masterclass. The way she bends language and forms intricacies out of her sentences? Poetry.

I’m so happy that I’m alive while Jesmyn Ward is writing.

This is out October 3rd. I think you should preorder it. You won’t regret it. Thank you Scribner for an advanced readers copy.

How can i put into words how i felt about Let Us Descend by Jesmynd Ward.

Brilliance,a masterpiece.

Ward has portrayed the horrors of slavery in the pre-Civil War era, with some of the most beautiful prose I’ve had the chance to read.

Beautifully written with vivid descriptions and imagery. This book was one big journey in a young woman's life. It is not always easy reading as the slaves suffer through starvation, mistreatment, rape, being separated from loved ones, worked hard, bought and sold, and beaten to name a few.

Ward's writing is powerful and I have a feeling that I will be thinking about and recommending this book for years to come.
