An interesting concept as to where our future may venture. Novels involving the decline in the birth of female babies have been written before, so it's not entirely new.

The planet has slowly been destroyed by man. Eve's life has been sheltered, protected from men. She knows little of the real world, other than information fed to her through her mothers. Eve has a very distorted perception of history and the present. Bram is there to re-enforce that world to Eve, though they never actually meet.

As the story progresses through Bram we uncover more about the current circumstances of the real world, including Bram's family - which is integral to the story. What will happen with Eve to ensure the survival of the human race.

Some futuristic novels can be immensely complicated, this one isn't. An very enjoyable dystopian novel, and I was delighted to find it was the first of a trilogy. I was surprised to discover a good way through the book the actual location of where the story is set, I had anonymised the location as a new generic city, so it actually came as a surprise.

Just finished re-reading - noticed a new detail or two, but otherwise rhe experience was just as great, and I can't wait to move on to The Eve Illusion now that the story is fresh in my mind again!

-------------------------

Let's set the bar super high right away, shall we? This was the best read of my year so far, if not longer than that.
I've had a huge crush on Tom since my preteens, and I'd read one of Giovanna's books before, so I was super excited when I heard about Eve of Man - really last minute because I live under a rock. I knew it was going to be brilliant - and it is.
So Eve of Man is, in many ways, your typical YA dystopia. Yet, it is also completely different. It is set in future London, at a time when women have stopped birthing girls, and only one female teenager lives - Eve.
Eve lives away from the world outside, which has been suffering the effects of global warming, waste and disregard for the environment. She was raised in a literal Tower, surrounded by fake perfection and preparing for the day when she is meant to start the Rebirth - which basically means she is supposed to singlehandedly produce a generation og girls.
What the EPO - the entity that basically governs the world - doesn't suspect is that Eve is curious and has a sharp mind. She can even see that her "friend" Holly is merely a projection, and eventually she meets the boy behind the projection.
There is a lot "meat" to this book. The characters are very rich and nuanced, and there are a lot of them. The context and the environment of the book is quite well described and somewhat plausible. I particularly love everything about Ben.
And then there are many important subjects that have been taken on and rexognized but in a subtle, non-preachy way, which I really appreciate.
I can't wait to read what comes after that literal cliffhanger at the end!
