I really enjoyed this book, and kind of wish I'd read it as a child! It was surprisingly realistic and severe for a children's fantasy book, despite beginning in a rather cute tone, and I get the feeling that Kendall deliberately illustrated this contrast in order to teach children valuable lessons through fantasy: that life, even in another world, is often hard; that we have to face our problems head on and still see the light in the darkness; that bad things can happen but we have to keep fighting; that we should challenge authority and embrace individuality; etc.
Very good story... if I ever have kids, I will definitely read this to them :)

Read this as a child and then re-read it as an adult. One of my favorite stories.

First reviewed in 2015:
The Gammage Cup is one of the most fun fantasy books I’ve ever read. One morning, Muggles wakes up and sees a fire on the mountain. There shouldn’t be fire on the mountain, but there is and soon it becomes apparent that the whole countryside is in great danger of the Hairless Ones—their enemies of the past—even though there is hardly anyone who believes in the old stories anymore. I love this story, not only for its depth of characters and well-planned plot, but because of the humor and ingenuity presented through the story.

Read for the second time in 2023:
I read this book years ago for school, and really enjoyed it. There’s something about the simplicity in this story, combined with typical human nature and a small group of people that worked to save the rest, that is appealing and just plain fun to read about. I think Carol Kendall had a lot of fun writing this story, and I know my siblings and I certainly had a lot of fun reading it together recently! If you enjoy fantasy with a twist, this would be an excellent choice. There’s a lot to love here!

This is an entertaining story with a sweet message and great characters. I would have loved some stronger world building. The first few chapters confused me, and I feel like I need to know what the other villagers of Minnipins are like. How similar are all the towns? I don't know that that would have bothered me as much as a child, though.

I loved this book! It’s a straightforward story. Quick, fun read. About a group of neurodivergent-coded weirdos who don’t fit in with their village. I thought the writing was clever and funny. I loved the character interactions. It’s a children’s book that adults can enjoy.
